Make Volunteering with Habitat for Humanity Part of Your Summer Fun!

A 2012 study showed that “volunteering helps people who donate their time feel more socially connected, thus warding off loneliness and depression. A growing body of evidence suggests that people who give their time to others might also be rewarded with better physical health—including lower blood pressure and a longer lifespan.”

There is something inspirational about the warm weather. The beginning of summer is the perfect time to seek the gratification and health benefits of volunteering for a good cause. The phrase “you get more than you give” is an excellent analogy to describe the benefits of volunteering.

One of our favorite causes is Habitat for Humanity. Habitat for Humanity was founded in 1976 with the mission of “seeking to put God’s love into action, bringing people together to build homes, communities and hope.”

Habitat for Humanity relies on thousands of volunteers, just like you, to carry out their mission and stabilize housing for hundreds of families. Volunteer opportunities include family services, where volunteers contribute to homeownership application processes directly with the family, fundraisers, youth engagement positions, office positions, home repair positions and more. You can even choose to volunteer in a group or as an individual.

Now, Habitat is in need of volunteers for the ReStore stores as regulars and for pickups. “The Twin Cities Habitat ReStore is a home improvement outlet where quality new and like-new building and repair materials are sold at discounted prices. Unlike our construction opportunities, ReStore shifts are three to four hours long.” There are currently two ReStore locations in the Twin Cities area; 510 County Road D, New Brighton; and 2700 Minnehaha Avenue, Minneapolis

Twin Cities Habitat hosts a variety of events every year, If you have any questions, contact the Volunteer Coordinator at 612-305-7114 or volunteer@tchabitat.org.

As Aristotle once said that, ‘the essence of life is “To serve others and do good.” Improve the quality of your life, and the lives of others who truly need it by volunteering for Habitat for Humanity this summer.
