Over time, debris such as lint, dirt, mud and other particles build up in the washing machine drain, causing the pipe to clog. Below we’ve provided couple different methods to clear a clogged laundry drain as well as the tools you’ll need to get the job done.
Recommended Tools:
- Safety glasses
- Rubber gloves
- Drain unclogging solution
- 50-foot plumber's snake
- Handheld drill
- Off-hand drill attachment (optional)
Step 1:
Locate the drain, either behind or under the washing machine and detaching the tubing to directly access the drain. Based on the manufacturer’s instructions of your unclogging solution, mix it and let it sit in the drain for the allotted amount of time. This will vary on based on the unclogging solution you choose to use.
Step 2
To clear out the blockage inside the pipe, you’ll use a plumber’s snake. Push the coil down the drain until you reach the blockage. Manually turn the plumber’s snake until you’re able to pass through the blockage.
Step 2 Alternative
With more a serious clog that you can’t fix manually – follow these alternative instructions for step 2:
Attach the plumber’s snake to a drill and use the extra handle attachment. Push the plumber’s snake into the plumbing line until you hit the blockage. Next, use grip the drill with both hands, and pull the trigger to spin the plumber’s snake. Adding the drill is helpful with more difficult clogs because it allows you to continue pushing your snake in case it gets caught on blockage within the pipe.
Step 3
Make sure to turn the snake both clockwise and counterclockwise. Pull the snake out of the drain several times if you’re dealing with a more advance clog.
Step 4
Once you've you’ve created a pathway with your plumber's snake, flush the pipe with water to clear out the rest of the blockage.
